Introduction

A mutant with an unstoppable healing power, adamantium metal claws and no-nonsense attitude makes the man called Logan, one of the most ferocious heroes in the universe. From the northern wilderness of Canada hails one of the gruffest, most irascible, totally cynical and brooding member of the X-Men ever to grace the team with his presence.

Don’t be what they made you. Laura… Laura… so, this is what it feels like.

Logan’s final words

Wolverine (born James “Jimmy” Howlett), also referred to as Wolverine and also known as Logan, was a mutant born with retractable forearm claws, enhanced physical parameters and a powerful healing factor. The co-leader of the X-Men, he was also a famous hero and warrior being a veteran of multiple wars.

After leading the X-Men for many years and earning a legendary reputation, Logan became old and vulnerable due to the poisoning of his admantium skeleton, resulting in his healing factor failing.

With taking care of Charles Xavier with the help of Caliban, Logan found a daughter in Laura, causing Zander Rice and his men to pursue them, until they defeated them both including his own clone X-24, who murdered him gruesomely.

Accepting his fate which he always wanted, Wolverine died in peace from his wounds with Laura next to him.

Life

Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Roy Thomas asked writer Len Wein to devise a character specifically named Wolverine, who was a Canadian of small stature and with a wolverine’s fierce temper.

John Romita Sr. designed the first Wolverine costume and believes he introduced the retractable claws, saying, “When I make a design, I want it to be practical and functional. I thought, ‘If a man has claws like that, how does he scratch his nose or tie his shoelaces?”

Wolverine first appeared in the final “teaser” panel of The Incredible Hulk #180 (cover-dated October 1974), written by Wein and penciled by Herb Trimpe.

The character then appeared in a number of advertisements in various Marvel Comics publications before making his first major appearance in The Incredible Hulk #181 (November 1974), again by the Wein–Trimpe team.

In 2009, Trimpe said he “distinctly remembers” Romita’s sketch and that, “The way I see it, [Romita and Wein] sewed the monster together and I shocked it to life! … It was just one of those secondary or tertiary characters, actually, that we were using in that particular book with no particular notion of it going anywhere.

We did characters in The [Incredible] Hulk all the time that were in [particular] issues and that was the end of them.” Though often credited as co-creator, Trimpe denied having had any role in Wolverine’s creation.

Early Life

James “Jimmy” Howlett was born in 1832 in what would later be known as the Northwest Territories of Canada. In 1845, James lay sick in his bed while Victor, who was currently visiting him, kept him company as James’ father arrived to check in on him.

A few moments later, Victor’s father, and John’s groundskeeper, Thomas Logan (who was also having an affair with John Howlett’s wife), entered the Howlett home, drunk, looking for James’ mother Elizabeth Howlett and had a confrontation with John, which had resulted in Thomas shooting John. James then heard gunfire and went to investigate, finding him dead.

It was under this grief-stricken incident that, in an act of vengeance, James’ mutation began to manifest as he sprout bone claws, slowly emerging from his fists and knuckles. In a wild rage, James screamed in anger and fury and impaled Thomas using his claws.

However, while impaling Thomas with his newly discovered bone claws, before dying, Thomas revealed that John wasn’t James’ real father. Much to James’ horror, with his dying breath, Thomas revealed that he was James’ true father by telling him he is also his son.

After Thomas died, Elizabeth, horrified by James’ mutation, cast her son out by calling him a freak as she questioned James as to what he was. Confused about what was happening to him, James fled and ran into the woods, with Victor following behind him.

After running away, Victor, who was also a mutant, caught up and overtook James. Victor said that they were brothers and vowed to stick together and that they would look after each other no matter what, eventually leading them to a life of rage and violence. As Victor was truly his own family, as they shared a father, James started going by the name “Logan”.

Over the next 128 years, as the two boys grew into men, Logan and Victor fought bravely together as soldiers for the United States in numerous wars.

The wars the two brothers participated in throughout their years together included the American Civil War (both participating on the Union side led by American President Abraham Lincoln), World War I (on the Western Front), World War II (both participating in the D-Day Invasion), and the Vietnam War using their mutant powers.

However, Victor grew increasingly violent and uncontrolled as time passed.

Meeting Ichirō Yashida

Sometime in 1945, Logan transferred from the European front to the Pacific front, where he is captured by Japanese forces prior to August 9 and is sent to a POW camp near Nagasaki.

During the Nagasaki bombing on August 9, 1945, Logan saves the life of Ichirō Yashida, a young officer in the Imperial Japanese Army.

After saving his life, Yashida thanks him and offers a Japanese samurai sword as a token of gratitude. Logan refuses but says to hold onto it for him, promising to return for it in the future.

Meeting Charles and Erik

In 1962, while traveling the world searching for mutants to fight the Hellfire Club, a young Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr come across Logan in a bar. They introduced themselves but before they can continue, he dismisses them.

Exploiting Gwen

In January 1973, Wolverine is hired as a bodyguard to a young woman but enters a sexual relationship with her against the rules. He is discovered the next morning.

Powers

  • Superhuman Strength: With his body naturally evolved and conditioned to the peak of human physical potential and continually adjusting to various forms of damage. After his skeleton was laced with the indestructible metal alloy adamantium, he can still effortlessly carry himself. He can overpower large full grown humans with ease, able to hurl them with a single hand, able to throw them up to 50 feet, he is able to easily defeat and overpower up to a dozen grown men in hand-to-hand combat, and Logan has the ability to knock out any man completely unconscious with one punch to the face. His monstrous physical strength also extends to his legs, as he is able to jump several feet into the air.
  • Superhuman Durability: Logan’s body and tissue is far more durable than a normal human’s. His durability is further enhanced after his bones are infused with adamantium; to the point that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible to kill or injure him. He has been repeatedly shot, stabbed, and has endured extreme blunt force trauma without passing out and barely slowing him down. In some instances, bullets have ricocheted off of his adamantium skeleton, barely piercing the skin. In fact, his body is durable to the point where he can survive the effects of a nuclear explosion, as well as the disintegrating effects of the Phoenix force with only a few layers of skin being destroyed.
  • Superhuman Speed: Logan is able to run over 60 mph and move with reflexes unobtainable by normal human beings. When sensing Victor was near and going after Kayla, he was able to leave from his job site and reach her car in minutes. Despite the effects of adamantium poisoning weakening him and causing him to age, Logan was able to catch up to Laura and the group of mutants even though they had already trekked a great distance. After injecting himself with the Transigen serum, he was able to compete with a moving vehicle.
  • Superhuman Agility: Logan has remarkable equilibrium and coordination, greater than any human athlete. He capable of scaling vertical surfaces with remarkable efficiency. He is manoeuvrable and graceful, able to pursue and outrun a target in various types of terrains. His skills allow him to fluidly dodge and attack from different directions without losing balance. He is shown noticeable acrobatics, lunging from trees to attack his target.

I ignored my instincts. And I ignored what I really am. And that won’t ever happen again.

Wolverine
  • Superhuman Senses: Logan’s senses are heightened to levels similar to various animals. He can track down and identify people through their scent alone, as well as detect their presence within a large area through scent and sound. This makes one disguising themselves, even Mystique using her shape-shifting powers, pointless due to the inability to change their scent. His hearing is equally acute, able to clearly hear the low whisper of William Stryker while submerged in water. He can see much further and closer than normal humans with perfect clarity, even in total darkness. His senses enable him to sense when danger is near, such as at the Yashida’s funeral.
    • Animal Empathy: Logan can sense the emotional state of animals on a basic level such as fear, anger, happiness or pain. He can communicate with them to make them aware of his actions and intent. This allows for dangerous animals to leave him alone rather than attacking him as would they normally would attack other people.

He has uncharted regenerative capabilities, enabling him to heal rapidly.

Jean Grey
  • Regenerative Healing Factor: Logan can heal and regenerate all physical and mental harm to himself instantly. Any damaged area or lost anatomy will be completely restored with no lingering side effects in seconds, even forcing objects embedded out to heal properly. Logan can rapidly regenerate from virtually anything and everything such as, gunshots to the head or body, stabbings, bombs, fire explosions, poisonings, nuclear bombs among many other things. Even if he clinically dies, he can quickly resuscitate himself, making him near-immortal. Despite being shot twice in the head and losing his memories, Logan was able to regenerate his brain cells and eventually regain his lost memories years later. However, he is still capable of feeling pain and enough harm can render him unconscious.
    • Longevity: Logan’s powerful regenerative healing factor keeps him from aging beyond his physical prime, having remained virtually unchanged despite being almost 200 years of age, potentially able to live forever. In addition to prolonging his life, his overall health, prowess, and condition remain at its peak. Hence, when he encountered Stryker after six years of his retirement, the latter stated that he had not aged a day.
    • Contaminant Immunity: Logan is virtually immune to all viruses, diseases, and most poisons or toxins. Only the most potent of chemicals will affect him and only for a brief period before returning to normal.
    • Superhuman Stamina: Logan exhibits inexhaustible drive, willpower and vitality, able to continue his exertions far longer than any normal human while showing no signs of weakening or exhaustion. He is highly accustomed to pain, able to withstand most levels of it while only slightly fazing him. He also has great endurance, having continue fighting effectively after suffering several critical wounds while his healing powers were suppressed and likewise survives cutting open his chest without being sedated.
    • Atmospheric Adaptation: Logan is able to survive and adapt to any environment or weather conditions without changing shape to adapt. Logan is able to survive at any temperature without discomfort. He can wear minimal clothing in sub-zero temperatures without any harm.
    • Psionic Resistance: Logan is highly resilient, if not immune, to all but the most powerful of telepathic manipulation. This is made evident when Silverfox failed to make him listen to her request, despite clutching his arm. Even more, Logan’s mind is able to withstand greater trauma, namely being to be sent back to 1973 by Shadowcat safely when Professor Xavier couldn’t. Against Xavier’s seizure-induced psychic attacks, he remained mostly mobile and survived the after-effects unharmed.

Kuzuri. Do you know what that means? An animal, fierce creature, with long claws and sharp teeth. It fears nothing.

  • Retractable Claws: Logan possesses a pair of three, 18-inch retractable claws in each forearm that emerge between each of his fingers’ knuckles. While they were originally made of dense bone like the rest of his skeletal structure, able to tear through most matter unharmed, they were surgically bonded with a near-indestructible metal adamantium which also caused a noticeable side-effect of reshaping his rough claws into sleek blades. These metal claws allow him to cut through absolutely any substance with little resistance.

Abilities

I’ve been in a lot of wars.

Logan
  • Master Martial Artist: Due to his advanced age and countless battles in both various wars and cage fights, Logan is very efficient, highly skilled and extremely lethal in various forms of martial arts and hand-to-hand combat, demonstrating proficiency in boxing and Muay Thai during his match with Blob, as well as many other martial arts. Logan was able to compete against Deadpool, Mystique and Lady Deathstrike, who are some of the best fighters on the planet. While mostly using savage slashes with his claws in combat, he is shown to be very precise and methodical, quickly adjusting his tactics to better suit the situation and type of opponent. If not his claws, he tends to use his elbows in combat, as seen against Gambit, Mystique, Lady Deathstrike, and the Yakuza.
    • Weapon Proficiency: Logan is proficient in handling any melee weapon or firearm, due to his war experiences. The usage of his adamantium claws translates to skill in wielding tekko-kagi claws, hand-held weapons used by ninja for self-defense against sword-wielding opponents, and are designed to block, trap and disarm enemies. When deprived of his adamantium claws, he properly wielded a heated Japanese sword against the Silver Samurai and decapitated his helmet. Despite his stated dislike for guns causing him not to use them for a very long time, in 2029 a weakened Logan showed great enough marksmanship to kill Zander Rice by shooting him in the throat and shot Pierce’s arm in a matter of moments, catching both of them completely by surprise. He also threw one of Spike’s bone drills back at him with force and accuracy.

  • Skilled Leader: Despite being more of a solo man, when the situation requires it, Logan is a capable leader. He led the X-Men into victory at the battle of Alcatraz, and his leadership ability was instrumental in the mission to stop Trask from building his Sentinels.
  • Stealth Mastery: Logan is able to sneak around at the Xavier institute with multiple “mercenaries” armed with night vision goggles and guns, being shot only once. Furthermore, he was able to sneak around Magneto’s base camp, and whilst being attacked by several mutants, he still didn’t alert the full force of the Brotherhood of Mutants and was able to slip among them after defeating the small group of mutants. In addition, he snuck into Three Mile Island’s facility without being noticed.

Weakness

  • Adamantium: Logan’s adamantium claws cannot penetrate other adamantium unless they are super-heated, to which a said weapon could potentially kill Logan as the Silver Samurai’s energized blades proved easily destroyed Logan’s claws. In the revised timeline, the adamantium inside his body was poisoning him. While his healing factor originally nullified his adamantium skeleton, by 2029, Logan’s healing became too weak, letting the poison start taking effect. The symptoms include chronic pain and regular coughing.
    • Drowning: Due to the weight of his adamantium-laced skeleton, it is difficult for Logan to swim as effectively as he could before. However, his superhuman strength and stamina allow him to compensate for the additional weight.
    • Magnetism: Due to the adamantium in his skeleton, Logan is vulnerable to being subdued or manipulated by enemies using magnetic powers.
    • Metal Detectors: Due to the adamantium in his skeleton, Logan can’t step through a metal detector without setting it off.
  • Decapitation: If Logan’s head were to be decapitated, he wouldn’t be able to regenerate/heal himself and would thus die. However, with the indestructible adamantium bonded to his skeletal structure, this task becomes far more difficult, with the super-heated adamantium blades being the only known weapons to be capable of doing it.
  • Drained Healing Factor: Logan’s healing powers themselves are not self-restoring. If any of its essences is extracted, the powers will be permanently impaired. This restarted his aging process. While still aging much slower than normal humans, by 2023, he began developing grey hair and minor wrinkles. Also, while originally healing at the same rate and efficiency, this power gradually continued to weaken, now taking hours if not days to recover (potentially able to bleed out). This can also leave scars plus he is vulnerable to toxins and such. His eyesight diminished, requiring glasses. He also gained arthritis, struggling to extend his claws and tires much easier.
  • Mental Impairment: Although Logan can regenerate his physical brain and thereby avoid any brain damage, his memories are still vulnerable to being damaged, as seen when Colonel Stryker shot him in the head, to which his regenerated brain tissue could not retain his memories. However, overtime, the damage done to Logan’s memory has gradually restored itself.
  • Oxygen Deprivation: While Logan can go for much longer periods without air, his healing factor is still dependent on his brain subconscious activity. As such, if Logan is deprived of oxygen long enough, allowing his brain to shut down, he can die.
